Austrian Alumni Session at the Beijing Humboldt Forum 2019

Stretching the Austrian Alumni network through exchange of experiences between the Chinese and Austrian Alumni

22 September 2019 –the Beijing Humboldt Forum (BHF) was held for the seventh time since its establishment in 2013. From 19th to 25th of September 2019 the BHF organized sessions under the general theme “Green Economy, Cultural Heritage and Artificial Intelligence” in Jinan, Beijing and Chengdu. Ministry Plenipotentiary and Director of the Section for Science and Technology of the Austrian Embassy Beijing (OSTA Beijing) Mr. Philipp Agathonos attended the opening ceremony of the forum in Beijing and delivered a speech on behalf of the Austrian Ambassador Dr. Friedrich Stift.

On Sunday, 22 September OSTA Beijing organized for the fifth time one of the parallel sessions at the University of International Business and Economics (UIBE) in Beijing. The session was opened and moderated by Mr. Philipp Agathonos. It covered a broad range of topics ranging from medicine and geology over arts and culture to training, AI, and innovation and was split into two parts.

Following a welcoming speech by China National Opera House (CNOH) soprano soloist, Ms. LI Jingjing, an Alumni of the University for Music and performing Arts Vienna, participants received three presentations in the field of medicine: Mr. Wolf Dieter RAUSCH, president of the Eurasia-Pacific Uninet (EPU) and Ms. WANG Feixue, EPU-Alumni, currently working at the Xuanwu Hospital, talked about Sino-Austrian cooperation in the field of TCM and TCM Therapies for aging diseases, while Prof. GAO Juntao, an alumni and leading researcher at the renowned Tsinghua University spoke about his research on Intelligent Imaging for Life Sciences. The session continued with a speech by Mr. LIU Yan from the Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences on the findings of the comprehensive investigations at the Tibetan plateau regarding the effects of huge anthropogenic carbon emissions, an introduction on the activities of the Office of the Austrian Exchange Organisation (ÖAD) and its office in Shanghai by Ms FU Xiaoyan and a report on this year’s European Forum Alpbach by Chen Jiamiao, Chinese students selected jointly by OSTA and ÖAD.

The second part of the session was organised jointly with the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria (FHOÖ). It started with a presentation by Mr. Alexander G. WELZL, lecturer at the University of Applied Sciences Technikum Wien and Member of the Expert Advisory Board, Center of Excellence for AI on  Artificial Intelligence and Innovation in China. It was followed by a speech by Mr. ZHANG Yu, Alumni and Founder of the Qingdao Children’s Art Theater on Sino-European drama culture exchange and a presentation by Ms. Karin PALMETSHOFER-HÖRSCHINGER from the Rosenbauer International AG respective the experience of her company with E-Learning tools. The Session was concluded by the panel discussion looking into “What do young talents need to sustainably perform in China?” The panel was composed by an equal number of Alumni, Company and academic representatives.
