Austrian Federal President Dr. Alexander Van der Bellen with a 250-person-strong delegation has paid a state visit to China from 7 to 12 April 2018. The delegation also included a cultural and scientific delegation with more than 30 high-ranking members from distinguished Austrian universities and organizations. The Office for Science and Technology Austria (OSTA) and the Austrian Cultural Forum in Beijing accompanied the delegation during their visits in Beijing and in Province Sichuan.

In Beijing, the delegation visited sites and monuments, like the Great Wall and the Lama Temple, as well as contemporary art clusters like the 798 Art Zone. They also visited the Beijing Planning Exhibition Hall, where the delegation got an overview of the long history, the current developments and future planning of the city Beijing.

On the 9th April, OSTA and the Austrian Cultural Forum co-hosted a reception at the Austrian Embassy for the cultural and scientific delegation. More than 50 Chinese officials, professors and representatives from renowned research and cultural organizations and universities also participated in the special event, which provided excellent networking opportunities for the Chinese and the Austrian guests.

A highlight of the visit in Province Sichuan was the visit to the China Zhige Peace Culture International Exchange Center (ZPCC), where the delegation got an understanding of peace culture in the region and discussed about the cooperation opportunity with the Austrian Study Centre for Peace and Conflict Resolution (ASPR). After this visit, the delegation attended the opening ceremony of the new Austrian consulate general in Chengdu.

In Chengdu, the delegation also accompanied the President Mr Van der Bellen and witnessed the launch of the China-Europe freight train service linking Chengdu with Austria’s capital Vienna.

Through a big variety of cultural and scientific activities in Beijing and Chengdu the delegation gained a better understanding of China’s cultural and scientific developments over the past years. The successful visit of the delegation will further intensify the scientific cooperation and cultural exchanges between Austria and China.
