17 November 2019 – On behalf of the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG), the Austrian Federal Ministry for Transport, Innovation and Technology (BMVIT) and in cooperation with AC Shanghai, OSTA organized an ICT delegation trip to Hangzhou, Jiaxing, Shanghai, Nanjing and Beijing from November 17th to 22nd 2019. On the one hand, the trip was to prepare the joint call between the FFG and the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), which is planned for early 2020, and on the other hand to support the scientific and business exchange of the Austrian delegation with CAS institutes, universities and Chinese entrepreneurs. The delegation was headed by Mr. Alexander Pogany, representative of the BMVIT, and by Mr Philipp Agathonos, Minister Plenipotentiary for science and technology and director of OSTA.

Some of the delegation had previously attended the China Hi-Tech Fair (CHTF) in Shenzhen. On the eve of the official start of the program, the Hangzhou Dianzi University (HDU) held a welcome banquet for the delegation as an expression of the university’s close cooperation with Austria, in particular with the company M.U.T, with which the HDU operates a joint research center. The program in Hangzhou started with a seminar on Artificial Intelligence and Digital Economy in the conference room of HDU. Central topics of the seminar were AI, secure data transfer platforms, deep learning, visual computing and autonomous driving technology.

In Jiaxing, the delegation visited the Yangtze Delta Institute of Tsinghua University and Institute 36 of CETC (China Electronics Technology Corporation). Both partners are already cooperating with Austria. CETC 36 is the main operator of CETC Europe based in Graz.

In Shanghai, the delegation visited the USTC Shanghai Institute for Advanced Studie of CAS, which is headed by the former student of Prof. Anton Zeilinger, Prof. PAN Jianwei. The delegation then visited the company Sense Time Shanghai. AC Shanghai held a reception for the delegation and Chinese partners from the Shanghai area. On the next day, the delegation visited the Institute of Microsystem and Information Technology Shanghai (SIMIT), which also belongs to the CAS. Intensive individual B2B, SCI2SCI and SCI2B discussions were held.

The Roundtable in Nanjing was jointly organized with Nanjing University (NJU). Scientists from the NJU reported on their research results in the ICT field and the Austrian delegation also gave presentations on the current state of research, which opened up new collaborations for both sides. This was also followed by SCI2SCI and B2B discussions, enabling a networking opportunity.

In Beijing, a seminar was organized in cooperation with the Institute of Computing Technology, CAS (ICT CAS). In addition to the presentations by the Austrian delegation, scientists from the ICT, CAS also reported on their research areas, in which they would like to cooperate with Austrian scientists. The seminar opened an intensive exchange between the Austrian and Chinese scientists and showed good opportunities for cooperation. During the evening reception, which was held at the Austrian embassy, the Austrian and Chinese partners could continue to discuss about their cooperation projects.

The whole delegation trip offered an excellent platform for Austrian and Chinese companies and research institutions to make new contacts and intensify existing collaborations. There was also a good opportunity for Austrian companies to get to know new business partners. The scientific exchange was also intensified.
