On 19 April 2016, the acting director of OSTA, Helmut Spitzl, represented the Austrian Embassy at the opening ceremony for a cooperation between the Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (SHUTCM) and the Longhua Hospital of SHUTCM with Lohmann & Rauscher and the Institute for technology-based Education in Health, Management and social Services International (IHM). The cooperation aims at establishing a joint “Lymphedema Therapist” vocational training program. In Austria, the University of Applied Sciences FH Joanneum cooperates with IHM, Lohmann & Rauscher and the Center for Lymphology at the LKH Hospital Wolfsberg on complex decongestive therapy. The SHUTCM is one of China’s oldest and highest ranking universities for Traditional Chinese Medicine.

In 2008, the first phase of the TCM Research Cluster Austria, an interdisciplinary TCM research platform of Austrian universities based on a Memorandum between the Eurasia-Pacific Uninet and the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences, was launched. Ever since, TCM has become an increasingly important topic in Sino-Austrian cooperation.
