Building a coherent Alumni network through exchange of experiences between the Chinese and Austrian Alumni

The Beijing Humboldt Forum 2018 hosted by the University of International Business and Economics (UIBE) and The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (AvH) and co-organized with partners including the Austrian Embassy Beijing and the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria (FH OOE) was held from 15. to 16. September at the University of International Business and Economics (UIBE) in Beijing. At the opening ceremony Mr. Friedrich Stift, Austrian Ambassador to China and Mongolia gave an opening speech. After his speech Ambassador Stift was appointed as Honorary Professor and Co-Director of Austrian Cultural Center at the UIBE.

On Sunday, September 16th numerous parallel sessions were held. The Science and Technology Section of the Austrian Embassy Beijing (OSTA) organized for the fifth time an Austrian Alumni Session.  The international chair Mr. Philipp Agathonos, Minister Plenipotentiary for Science and Technology at the Austrian Embassy Beijing, and the national chair Ms. LI Xiaoxin, Vice Director of WRSA & Director, Sub-Association of Chinese Academics from Germany and Austria of WRSA opened the Alumni Session.

More than thirty Alumni from various areas participated at the Austrian Alumni Session. Under the topic „ Science and Technology as a link between Green Economy, Cultural Heritage and Life Science“ the Alumni Session was composed of three parts. Twelve Alumni, six Chinese and six Austrian, gave presentations. The Austrian Speakers were Mr. Martin Thenmayer, Head of Unit for Liaison Services and Coordination, Austrian Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research, Mr. Arnold Obermayr, Cultural Counsellor of Austrian Embassy Beijing, Ms. Alexandra Wagner, Head of the Austrian Center Shanghai, Mr. Wolf-Dieter Rausch, President of the Eurasia Pacific Uninet, University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna, Mr. Dieter Hopf, director of Large Hydro Andritz and Mr. Andreas Zehetner, Vice President International Affairs, University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria. The Chinese Speakers were Mr. Zhao Tuanjie, Doctor in the Beijing Erlonglu Hospital, Ms. Lin Yihui, CEO of Yozao Education, Mr. Wang Likun, director assistant of Kaytrip, Mr. Liu Guangzhe, office Manager, Sino-Austrian Research Center for Environmental Protection in North West University of Agriculture and Forestry, Mr. Lin Qunhan from the Beijing Jiulong Shangyuan Health Technology Co. Ltd. and Ms. Gu Wenyan, a Ph.D candidate at Fudan University who gave a reading of an Excerpt from her newly published novella “Dimu”.

The Austrian Alumni Session at the Beijing Humboldt Forum provided a platform for Alumni to socialize and strengthen contacts and was unanimously recognized and applauded by all participants



OSTA visits TIPCCAS in Beijing

In preparation for the Austrian delegation trip in the field of Advanced Materials which will take place in November 2018 in close cooperation with CAS, Mr. Philipp Agathonos, Minister Plenipotentiary for Science and Technology and director of OSTA visited the Technical Institute of Physics and Chemistry of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (TIPCCAS) on 12. September and had an exchange of views with Deputy Director Mr. WANG Xuesong. Both sides reviewed the successful Chinese-Austrian round table on advanced materials in 2016 and agreed to co-organize a one-day event including lab visit, science-to-science talks and B2B meetings this year.


The Austrian Federal Chancellor visited Hong Kong

Intensifying bilateral relations in many fields

The Austrian Federal Chancellor Sebastian Kurz visited Hong Kong from 31. August to 2. September 2018. He was accompanied by Norbert Hofer, Federal Minister of Transport, Innovation and Technology, Heinz Faßmann, Federal Minister of Education, Science and Research, Margarete Schramböck, Minister of Digitalisation and Economics and the President of the Austrian Economic Chamber, Harald Mahrer. The visit aimed at deepening the bilateral cooperation in particular in the areas of education, scientific research and technological innovation. On August 31, the Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Mrs Carrie Lam, met with Chancellor Kurz and the three Federal Ministers at the Government House of Hong Kong. Following that meeting the three ministers had a frank exchange of views with the Secretary for Innovation and Technology, Mr. Nicholas YANG. Ms Schramböck and Mr Faßmann also had meetings with their counterparts, Mr Bernard CHAN, Acting Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, and Mr Kevin YEUNG Yun-hung, Secretary for Education. On September 1, the delegation visited i.a. Cyberport, the Science and Technology Park (HKSTP) and the Application Innovation Center of Lenzing in Hong Kong. The office for Science and Technology in Beijing supported the Austrian General Consulate in Hongkong in preparation of the visit.

02 August 2018 – Mr. Ingolf Schädler, Head of Innovation at the Austrian Federal Ministry for Transport, Innovation and Technology, Dr. Margit Noll, Chair of the Management Board of JPI Urban Europe, and Mr. Max Pfeiler, Deputy Director of OSTA, paid a first visit to the Science and Technology Department of the Sichuan Province (SCST) in Chengdu. Both sides held fruitful talks and reached a deeper understanding during their meeting. Mr Schädler held a presentation on Research, Technology and Innovation (RTI) in Austria by introducing the state-of-the-art examples on smart city and emphasized the important role of BMVIT and FFG. Mr. Chen Xuehua, Deputy Director General of SCST presented the S&T achievements and developments as well as current international cooperations of the Province Sichuan. Both sides discussed the common interests on potential cooperation fields. Mr. Pfeiler reported on the next Austrian Technology Day in Chengdu scheduled for the autumn and SCST expressed its readiness to support this project.

01 August 2018 – The 2nd High-Level International Forum on Sustainable Urban Development, organised by the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) and the China Center for Urban Development (CCUD), was opened in Chengdu. HE Ambassador Dr. Friedrich Stift held a presentation on Austrian cases of sustainable urban development with the example of the Smart City of Vienna. Mr. Ingolf Schädler, Head of Innovation at the Austrian Federal Ministry for Transport, Innovation and Technology, delivered a speech at the event and introduced the EU – Joint Programming Initiative URBAN EUROPE, underlying that new ways of citizens participation in urban development will be needed in order to tap the full potential of technology driven innovation within cities. Dr. Margit Noll, Chair of the Management Board of JPI Urban Europe, also held a presentation on Sustainable Urban Development. Deputy Director of OSTA, Mr. Max Pfeiler also attended the Forum and assisted the representatives from Austria.



OSTA visits Hongkong Polytechnic University

12 July 2018 – After the visit of a  Delegation from the Austrian Region of Burgenland led by Governor Hans Niessl in June, Mr. Max Pfeiler, Deputy Director of OSTA, accompanied by Mr. Franz Roessler, Austrian Trade Commissioner in Hongkong, paid another visit to the Hongkong Polytechnic University (PolyU). Ms Karen Jiang, Assistant Director of Innovation and Technology Development, Innovation and Technology Development Office (ITDO), Ms Sini Liu, Manager of ITDO and Ms Wynne Wong, Senior Manager of International Affairs Office (IAO), greeted the Austrian Delegation at the meeting.

PolyU presented the current cooperation with Burgenland, other European universities and research organisations. OSTA introduced and outlined the intended Austrian Technology Day in Hongkong, which will be hosted by the Austrian Promotion Agency and co-hosted by the Austrian Chamber of Commerce and OSTA. PolyU kindly provided suggestions and expressed its interest to the coming event. Furthermore, the student exchange program was also a main topic of the meeting.


OSTA attends Austrian Startup Nite 2018 in Hongkong

11 July 2018 – Mr. Max Pfeiler, Deputy Director of OSTA, took part in the Austrian Startup Nite 2018 in Hongkong, which was hosted by the Austrian Chamber of Commerce Hongkong in cooperation with the Austrian Global Incubator Network (GIN).

The Program Managers of GIN, Ms Annamaria Andres and Ms Carina Margreiter, introduced the startup ecosystem of Austria as well as the GoAustria Program and GoAsia Initiative. Seven highly innovative tech-startups of Austria – Artivive, Connect, Insider Navigation, Prewave, SCIO, SIMAX and Visual Vertigo – represented technologies in various fields during the Pitch and Switch event.

The Startup Nite goHongKong 2018 brought together startups, seasoned entrepreneurs, investors, industry leaders, incubators and tech-innovators from all around the world and enabled the experience exchange of the masterminds.


OSTA participated at the 22nd China International Software Expo

On the 29 of June 2018, the 22nd China International Software Expo was opened at Beijing Exhibition Center. Philipp Agathonos, Minister Plenipotentiary for Science and Technology attended the global summit forum of software industry development.

The Expo was hosted by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) and the Beijing Municipal People’s Government. Miao Wei, Minister of MIIT and Chen Jining, Mayor of Beijing delivered welcoming speeches. The forum gathered representatives from nearly 400 companies, officials from 18 Chinese local administrations and 11 foreign embassies, discussing software development, big data and information technology.


Burgenland delegation visits China

10 June 2018 – A Delegation of the Province of Burgenland and BMVIT, composed by Mr Hans Niessl (Governor), Mr Christian Illedits (President of the Provincial Parliament), Mr Alexander Petschnig (Vice Governor), Mr Gernot Grimm (Head of the Staff Group Technology Transfer) and other officials paid a visit to China from 10th to 17th of June 2018. The delegation stopped at first in Hongkong and Jieyang in order to meet several high level officials and take part in commercial forums.

On the 13th of June the Burgenland Delegation met Mr XU Dazhe (Governor of Hunan Province) accompanied by OSTA and Cultural Section of the Austrian Embassy, in Changsha and had fruitful talks about the long term established partnership of both sides. On the next day companies from Burgenland attended a business forum and promoted their advantageous technologies in the fields of energy efficiency and water treatment.

On the following days the Delegation made stops in the cities of Zhangjiajie and Shanghai. In Zhangjiajie the Mayor of the city of Mörbisch in Burgenland signed a partnership agreement with the Mayor of Zhangjiajie.
