17. September 2017 – OSTA had – for the third time already – the honor to organize Austrian participation at the Beijing Humboldt Forum 2017, which was held from 15. to 17. September at the University of International Business and Economics (UIBE) in Beijing.

The opening ceremony was hosted by Prof. Wang, the President of UIBE. The opening session also included some words of introduction spoken by Philipp Agathonos, the Director of OSTA and a speech by former Federal Minister Dr. Friedhelm Frischenschlager on the State of Play of EU-China Relations.

On Sunday, 17 September BHF participants were invited to join one or more of numerous parallel sessions, three of which were Austrian-led. The University for Applied Science from Upper Austrian held a discussion on the “Value Chain“, while the (EPU) organised a session by Professors form the Vienna University of Veterinary Science addressing the very topical issue, “what can veterinary scientists achieve towards Healthy Food”.

OSTA chaired a session of Austrian Alumnis at which two Alumnis, Ms Wenyan Gu, PhD student (Modern Chinese Lterature) at the Fudan University and participant of the European Forum Alpbach 2017 and Dr. Ming Su, Associate Professor at the Department of Computer Science, Nankai University, Tianjin gave lectures from their field of work and talked about their experience in Austria. The second part of the Session consisted of three presentations: a general overview of the current situation of cooperations between Austria and China in the field of science and research (OSTA), a presentation of the activities of the OeAD in China (Ms. Wagner) and a presentation of the activities of the EPU (Prof. Rausch).

Following this session a memorandum of understanding for a future strategic partnership, between the UIBE and EPU, was signed by Prof. Rausch, Prof. Wang, the President of EPU and Prof. Zhao, the Vice President of UIBE.

The BHF was concluded by a closing ceremony to which all speakers and partners were invited to reflect on the past days.

Austrian and Chinese scientists share experience in nanotechnology cooperation

On the occasion of the visit of the Austrian delegation of nanotechnology experts, OSTA organized a workshop on the topic “results of the nano delegation visit to China 2015” at the Austrian embassy on the 14 September 2017.

In the framework of the joint call between Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG) and Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), three joint research projects were selected in 2015 and financially supported. The Chinese project winners from Institute of Microelectronics CAS, Institute of Chemistry CAS und Institute of Physics CAS were invited to the workshop and introduced their research projects jointly with their Austrian partners.

Top researchers from the Beijing Institute of Nanoenergy and Nanosystems of the Chinese Academy of Sciences also attended the workshop and presented their research projects. Following the workshop, all the participants were invited to a welcome reception at the Austrian Embassy.

4 to 6 August 2017 – The RobotChallenge is an international championship for self-made, autonomous and mobile robots. It was established in Vienna, Austria in 2004 and since that year more than 2.000 robots from all over the world have taken part in the competition. This year the robot challenge was held in Beijing.
Ten Austrian students’ participation at the RobotChallenge 2017 in the Zhongguancun National Independent Innovation Demonstration Zone Exhibition Center was supported by Federal Ministry of Science, Research and Economy and the Office for Science and Technology (OSTA) Beijing.
On the evening of the first day of the competition, they were received by the new ambassador Mr. Friedrich Stift.
In addition to good placements, also two medals were won: a gold medal in the competition category “Humanoid Sumo” by the team “RobBox 3.0” from the “HTL Rennweg” and a bronze medal in the competition category “Nano Sumo” by the team “Deimos I” from the “Technische Universität Graz”. Other competition categories with Austrian participation were: “Line Follower-Adult”, “Line Follower Enhanced-Adult”, “Air Race” and “Lego Sumo-Adult”.

OSTA participates to High-Level International Forum on Sustainable Urban Development

21 July 2017 – During a full day seminar and panel discussion at the Convention and Exhibition Center in Chengdu, academic and political experts on urban development took a deep look into the topics of Urban Drivers and Financial Innovation, Urban Infrastructure Connectivity and Spartial Development, Urban Resilience, Prosperity and Livability, Urban Innovation and Sharing Economy, Urban Culture and Featured Development, Urban and Smart Cities, and other key issues. The Forum was hosted by Chengdu Municipal People’s Government and China Center for Urban Development (CCUD) under the framework of the cooperation agreement signed by United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN Habitat) and CCUD in 2016.

The forum guests were warmly welcomed by Mr. Li Tie, director general of CCUD, Mr. Yang Hongbo, Vice Governor of Sichuan Province, and Mr. Luo Qiang, Mayor of City Chengdu. Mr. Joan Clos, Under Secretary General of the United Nations (UN), was holding an impressive Keynote Speech about the world-wide urban development status quo. From the EU side, representatives of Austria, Germany, Italy, Poland and EU Delegation took part of the High Level Forum.

OSTA supports GIN and Austrian Start-ups

10 to 12 July 2017 – It was a first time for 8 Austrian Start-ups together with their entrepreneurs coming to Hongkong, one of the most dynamic cities of the start-up scene, for scouting and learning purposes. This initiative, named as goHongKong, is supported by the Austrian Government and implemented by the Global Incubator Network of Austria (GIN). During the 3 weeks, the Austrian entrepreneurs have the opportunity to undergo an intensive accelerator programme at the Hongkong Science and Technology Park (HKSTP) and participate to the RISE Conference, one of the most famous start-up event world-wide.

OSTA accompanied the GIN supervisors, Ms. Ivana Bacanovic and Mr. Jürgen Rattenberger, to the events and assisted the start-ups by hauling their businesses.

Deepening Sino-Austrian scientific collaboration

21 June 2017 – In preparation for the fourth joint call between the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG) and Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Philipp Agathonos, Minister Plenipotentiary for Science and Technology and director of OSTA, visited the Institute of Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences (ICCAS) in Beijing. ICCAS is one of the most renowned research facilities in the field of chemical research in China and was one of the three selected winners for the first joint call between FFG and CAS. From 10 September to 15 September this year, an Austrian delegation led by Austrian Federal Ministry for Transport, Innovation and Technology (BMVIT) will visit ICCAS during their trip to China for a one-day event including lab visit and science-to-science talks.

12 June 2017 – 2017 International Cleantech Summit and 2nd Annual Meeting of 3iPET was held by Foreign Economic Cooperation Office, Ministry of Environmental Protection (FECO MEP) in Beijing with more than 250 participants from domestic and overseas governmental organisations and enterprises. Huang Runqiu, Vice Minister of Ministry of Environmental Protection of China also attended the event and addressed a keynote speech to the audience.

JPI Urban Europe and CAUPD signed an agreement during the China-EU leaders‘ meeting

2 June 2017 – JPI Urban Europe (JPI UE) and the China Academy of Urban Planning and Design (CAUPD) signed a memorandum of understanding to intensify the partnership in the field of urbanisation. The formal ceremony took place in the course of the 3rd EU-China High Level Innovation Cooperation Dialogue in the presence of Wan Gang, China’s Minister of Science and Technology and Carlos Moedas, European Commissioner for Research, Science and Innovation in the EU headquarter in Brussels in Belgium. The agreement was signed by Yang Baojun, President of CAUPD and Ingolf Schädler, Chair of the governing board of JPI UE and deputy Director General at the Austrian Federal Ministry for Transport, Innovation and Technology. Afterwards, all the participants had a group photo with China’s Prime Minister Li Keqiang and the President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker.

OSTA visits SINANO

Preparations for the upcoming joint call with CAS are under way

24 Mai 2017 – In preparation for the fourth joint call between the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG) and Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Philipp Agathonos, Minister Plenipotentiary for Science and Technology and director of OSTA, visited the Suzhou Institute of Nano-tech and Nano-bionics (SINANO), Chinese Academy of Sciences in Suzhou. In a friendly atmosphere, both sides expressed their interest in deepening the scientific collaboration in the field of nanotechnologies. In 2013, a Nano-Roundtable was successfully co-organised by OSTA and SINANO. From 10 September to 15 September this year, an Austrian delegation led by Austrian Federal Ministry for Transport, Innovation and Technology (BMVIT) will visit SINANO during their trip to China for a one-day event including lab visit and science-to-science talks. Lisa Kronreif, Vice Consul for Commercial Affairs from the Austrian Consulate in Shanghai also attended the Meeting.

Solving China’s environmental problems with Austrian technologies

17 May 2017 – To deepen the Sino-Austrian technological cooperation in the field of environmental protection, Philipp Agathonos, Minister Plenipotentiary for Science and Technology and director of OSTA and Elisabeth Rysanek, head of the environmental and agricultural section of the Austrian Embassy in Beijing, paid a visit to the foreign economic cooperation office of ministry of environmental protection (MEPFECO). Both sides recognized in the fruitful exchange that Austria enjoys a wide range of leading environmental technologies, especially in the field of land reclamation and waste disposal, and cooperation potential between Austria and China should be highly great.
