Deepening research cooperation in Shenyang

On 20 January 2016, meetings between 22 Austrian experts on advanced materials and top-level Chinese researchers took place at the Institute of Metal Research of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (IMR CAS) in Shenyang. The delegation was warmly welcomed by Prof YANG Rui, Director of IMR CAS, and Prof ZHANG Jian, Deputy Director of IMR CAS, who also gave an overview of the institute. After a lab visit, the Austrian representatives came together with their Chinese counterparts in Science-2-Science talks. A joint call of the Austrian Research Promotion Agency and the Chinese Academy of Sciences on the topic of advanced materials will be launched after the delegation visit.
IMR CAS was founded in 1953 and has signed over 80 agreements and MoUs during the last 15 years in order to foster cooperation with international research institutes and organization. Director YANG Rui provided a testimonial for his successful cooperation with Europe during the Research and Innovation Tour in Shenyang in September 2015.

The second meeting of the Austrian delegation in Beijing took place at the prestigious Tsinghua University on 19 January 2016. Prof PAN Wei, Dean of the School of Materials Science and Engineering, welcomed the delegation and Prof LIN Hong gave an overview of Tsinghua’s research facilities. After a visit of the Center for Testing and Analyzing of Materials, the delegation discussed specific research cooperation with researchers of Tsinghua University in Science-2-Science talks pre-arranged by OSTA. The delegation also visited the first 3D-ceramic printing machine “CeraFab 7500” delivered to Tsinghua by the Austrian company Lithoz, which also participated in the delegation. The shipment follows an agreement signed between Lithoz and Tsinghua in September 2015.
Tsinghua University was founded in 1911 and has 22 first-level national key disciplines and 13 State Key Laboratories. The School of Materials Science and Engineering was founded in 1988 and has several top class laboratories such as the State Key Lab for New Ceramics and Fine Processing and the Key Lab for Advanced Materials.

On 18 January 2016, the Austrian Ambassador, Ms Irene Giner-Reichl, cordially welcomed a delegation of representatives from renowned Austrian research institutes and companies in the field of advanced materials as well as representatives from top Chinese research institutes. In the coming days, the Austrian delegation will visit Beijing, Shenyang and Shanghai to find new Chinese partners and reinforce strategic joint research and business relations.

On 18 January 2016, 22 Austrian experts on advanced materials visited the renowned Technical Institute of Physics and Chemistry of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (TIPCCAS) in Beijing, where they were warmly welcomed by the Deputy Director of TIPCCAS, Prof WANG Pengfei. Dr. ZHANG Yang, Vice Director of the Division of Science and Technology, gave an introduction. After a visit through some of TIPCCAS’ state-of-the labs, the Austrian representatives actively engaged with matching Chinese researchers in Science-2-Science and B2B talks.
TIPCCAS was founded in 1999 and is one of China’s leading institutes for basic research with a strong focus on innovation, technology transfer and international cooperation. The visit of the Austrian delegation led by Mr Alexander Pogany from the Austrian Ministry for Transport, Innovation and Technology (BMVIT) is organized by OSTA in cooperation with Advantage Austria.
Aiming at new Sino-Austrian research and business cooperation

On 17 January 2016, 22 representatives from renowned Austrian research institutes and companies in the field of advanced materials started their delegation visit to China. During the next week they will visit Tsinghua University and top level research institutes of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing, Shenyang and Shanghai. After the visit, a joint call on the topic of advanced materials will be launched by the Austrian Research Promotion Agency and the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
During the welcome session, Acting Director of OSTA, Mr Helmut Spitzl, gave an overview of the research landscape in China. Mr Rafael Jimenez, Business Advisor at the EU SME Centre Beijing, shared his experience in developing business relations with China. The delegation visit led by BMVIT is organized by OSTA in cooperation with Advantage Austria.

On 17 September 2015, OSTA visited the Technical Institute of Physics and Chemistry (TIPCCAS) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Acting Director, Mr Helmut Spitzl, gave a presentation about Science and Technology in Austria and introduced the upcoming joint call with CAS on advanced materials. Deputy Director Prof. WANG Pengfei gave an overview about TIPCCAS and three researchers presented their findings in the areas of liquid metal materials, bionic intelligent materials and organic nano-photonics. Prof. WANG as well as the other researchers expressed a strong interest in cooperating with Austria and are looking forward to jointly hosting a roundtable in January 2016.

On 9 September 2015, Acting Director of OSTA, Mr Helmut Spitzl, had fruitful discussions with Director Prof. YANG Rui and Deputy Director ZHANG Jian. Both expressed a strong interest in cooperating with Austrian researchers in the area of advanced materials and are looking forward to the visit of an Austrian delegation in January 2016.
Tsinghua University to explore the field of generative production of high-performance ceramics

On 4 September 2015, the Austrian delegation visited the School of Materials Science and Engineering at Tsinghua University. In the presence of Prof. ZHANG Zhengjun, Dean of the School of Materials Science and Engineering, Dr. Johannes Homa, CEO of Lithoz, and Prof. PAN Wei, Director of the State Key Laboratory of New Ceramics and Fine Processing, signed an agreement. Tsinghua University plans to soon put the first “CeraFab” network printer into operation.

In preparation for the second joint call with Chinese Academy of Sciences, Acting Director of OSTA, Mr Helmut Spitzl, visited the Shanghai Institute of Ceramics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (SICCAS) on 22 May 2015. Director Assistant Prof. Dr. SUN Jing and her colleagues from different departments of SICCAS attended the meeting. Prof. SUN expressed interest in cooperating with Austrian researchers in the area of advanced materials and extended an invitation to host a Chinese-Austrian roundtable on this topic in early 2016.
