Stretching the Austrian Alumni network through exchange of experiences between the Chinese and Austrian Alumni

22 September 2019 –the Beijing Humboldt Forum (BHF) was held for the seventh time since its establishment in 2013. From 19th to 25th of September 2019 the BHF organized sessions under the general theme “Green Economy, Cultural Heritage and Artificial Intelligence” in Jinan, Beijing and Chengdu. Ministry Plenipotentiary and Director of the Section for Science and Technology of the Austrian Embassy Beijing (OSTA Beijing) Mr. Philipp Agathonos attended the opening ceremony of the forum in Beijing and delivered a speech on behalf of the Austrian Ambassador Dr. Friedrich Stift.

On Sunday, 22 September OSTA Beijing organized for the fifth time one of the parallel sessions at the University of International Business and Economics (UIBE) in Beijing. The session was opened and moderated by Mr. Philipp Agathonos. It covered a broad range of topics ranging from medicine and geology over arts and culture to training, AI, and innovation and was split into two parts.

Following a welcoming speech by China National Opera House (CNOH) soprano soloist, Ms. LI Jingjing, an Alumni of the University for Music and performing Arts Vienna, participants received three presentations in the field of medicine: Mr. Wolf Dieter RAUSCH, president of the Eurasia-Pacific Uninet (EPU) and Ms. WANG Feixue, EPU-Alumni, currently working at the Xuanwu Hospital, talked about Sino-Austrian cooperation in the field of TCM and TCM Therapies for aging diseases, while Prof. GAO Juntao, an alumni and leading researcher at the renowned Tsinghua University spoke about his research on Intelligent Imaging for Life Sciences. The session continued with a speech by Mr. LIU Yan from the Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences on the findings of the comprehensive investigations at the Tibetan plateau regarding the effects of huge anthropogenic carbon emissions, an introduction on the activities of the Office of the Austrian Exchange Organisation (ÖAD) and its office in Shanghai by Ms FU Xiaoyan and a report on this year’s European Forum Alpbach by Chen Jiamiao, Chinese students selected jointly by OSTA and ÖAD.

The second part of the session was organised jointly with the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria (FHOÖ). It started with a presentation by Mr. Alexander G. WELZL, lecturer at the University of Applied Sciences Technikum Wien and Member of the Expert Advisory Board, 42.cx Center of Excellence for AI on  Artificial Intelligence and Innovation in China. It was followed by a speech by Mr. ZHANG Yu, Alumni and Founder of the Qingdao Children’s Art Theater on Sino-European drama culture exchange and a presentation by Ms. Karin PALMETSHOFER-HÖRSCHINGER from the Rosenbauer International AG respective the experience of her company with E-Learning tools. The Session was concluded by the panel discussion looking into “What do young talents need to sustainably perform in China?” The panel was composed by an equal number of Alumni, Company and academic representatives.

OSTA attends the Micius Quantum Prize Ceremony at the USTC

18 September 2019 – The International Conference on Emerging Quantum Technology (ICEQT 2019) was held from 15 to 20 September at the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC), in the city of Hefei. At the afternoon on 18 September, the Micius Quantum Prize for promoting emerging quantum technologies, recognizing significant science advance ranging from the early conceptual contributions to the recent experimental breakthroughs, was awarded to the laureates, including three Austrian scientists, Prof. Rainer Blatt, Prof. Peter Zoller, Prof. Anton Zeilinger and Austrian alumni Prof. Jianwei Pan. Max Pfeiler, deputy director of OSTA, attended the prize ceremony at invitation of the local organizing committee.

The Micius Quantum Prize’s laureates 2018 and 2019 were announced at the same time. The 2018 laureates for theory category included Prof. Peter Zoller for the outstanding theoretical contributions that enabled the scalable implementations of quantum information processing, such as quantum computation with trapped ions, quantum simulation with ultracold atoms, and quantum repeaters; Prof. Rainer Blatt won the experimental category prizes 2018 for his pioneering experimental work on the realizations of quantum logic gates, multiparticle entanglement, quantum simulation and quantum computing algorithms using trapped ions. The experimental category prize 2019 went to Prof. Anton Zeilinger and Prof. Jianwei Pan for their groundbreaking experiments in multi-photon interferometry and free-space quantum transmission that enabled practically secure and large-scale quantum communications.

The excellent results of awarding the prize show the outstanding development of Austria in the field of quantum technologies. OSTA has built up a fruitful science communication relationship with the USTC.

19 January 2019 – The Sub-Association of Chinese Academics from Germany and Austria of the Western Returned Scholars Association (WRSA) organized its new year reception 2019 with over 150 alumni in Beijing. Mr Philipp Agathonos, Minister Plenipotentiary, Director of OSTA, attended the reception and gave an opening speech.

WRSA is a national association of returned Chinese students from overseas and has more than 220,000 members. It connects more than 100 associations of Chinese scholars overseas.

On 15 January 2019, the Science and Technology Section of the Austrian Embassy Beijing (OSTA Beijing) successfully held its traditional New Year’s Reception at the Austrian Embassy. Mr. Philipp Agathonos, Minister Plenipotentiary for Science and Technology and director of OSTA opened the reception expressing his gratitude to our partners in the public administration, in university and research institutions and leading high-tech companies. He particularly welcomed our alumni, who an important link between Austria and China and the guests, who traveled from Tianjin, Shenyang, Shanghai, Hangzhou, Jiaxing, Chengdu and Shenzhen to spend an evening at the Austrian embassy. All in all over 130 guests enjoyed the Austrian hospitality and used the opportunity for some intense networking.

On 23th Dez.  KayTrip, a Chinese Travel Agency with a growing focus on the (Central) European market, organized its annual Christmas party in Beijing and invited the Science and Technology Section of the Austrian Embassy (OSTA Beijing), the German Embassy, the Sub Association of the Western Returned Scholars Association and the Economic Development zone of the city of Xingtai to act as co-organizers. More than 200 Participants came together to enjoy traditional Chinese music and Glühwein served at Christmas markets across Central Europe.

2018 Austrian Alumni Event in Shanghai

08 Dezember 2018 – The Austrian Alumni Event 2018, co-organized by Austrian Center Shanghai, OSTA, AC Shanghai and Eurasia Pacific Uninet, was held in Shanghai. This event gathered more than 100 guests with Austrian affilations and experiences. OSTA Director Minister Plenipotentiary, Mr Philipp Agathonos, attended the event with a short speech on the current as well as the future role of OSTA in strengthening the Austrian Alumni network in China.

The Beijing Humboldt Forum 2018 hosted by the University of International Business and Economics (UIBE) and The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (AvH) and co-organized with partners including the Austrian Embassy Beijing and the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria (FH OOE) was held from 15. to 16. September at the University of International Business and Economics (UIBE) in Beijing. At the opening ceremony Mr. Friedrich Stift, Austrian Ambassador to China and Mongolia gave an opening speech. After his speech Ambassador Stift was appointed as Honorary Professor and Co-Director of Austrian Cultural Center at the UIBE.

On Sunday, September 16th numerous parallel sessions were held. The Science and Technology Section of the Austrian Embassy Beijing (OSTA) organized for the fifth time an Austrian Alumni Session.  The international chair Mr. Philipp Agathonos, Minister Plenipotentiary for Science and Technology at the Austrian Embassy Beijing, and the national chair Ms. LI Xiaoxin, Vice Director of WRSA & Director, Sub-Association of Chinese Academics from Germany and Austria of WRSA opened the Alumni Session.

More than thirty Alumni from various areas participated at the Austrian Alumni Session. Under the topic „ Science and Technology as a link between Green Economy, Cultural Heritage and Life Science“ the Alumni Session was composed of three parts. Twelve Alumni, six Chinese and six Austrian, gave presentations. The Austrian Speakers were Mr. Martin Thenmayer, Head of Unit for Liaison Services and Coordination, Austrian Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research, Mr. Arnold Obermayr, Cultural Counsellor of Austrian Embassy Beijing, Ms. Alexandra Wagner, Head of the Austrian Center Shanghai, Mr. Wolf-Dieter Rausch, President of the Eurasia Pacific Uninet, University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna, Mr. Dieter Hopf, director of Large Hydro Andritz and Mr. Andreas Zehetner, Vice President International Affairs, University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria. The Chinese Speakers were Mr. Zhao Tuanjie, Doctor in the Beijing Erlonglu Hospital, Ms. Lin Yihui, CEO of Yozao Education, Mr. Wang Likun, director assistant of Kaytrip, Mr. Liu Guangzhe, office Manager, Sino-Austrian Research Center for Environmental Protection in North West University of Agriculture and Forestry, Mr. Lin Qunhan from the Beijing Jiulong Shangyuan Health Technology Co. Ltd. and Ms. Gu Wenyan, a Ph.D candidate at Fudan University who gave a reading of an Excerpt from her newly published novella “Dimu”.

The Austrian Alumni Session at the Beijing Humboldt Forum provided a platform for Alumni to socialize and strengthen contacts and was unanimously recognized and applauded by all participants

OSTA visits TIPCCAS in Beijing

In preparation for the Austrian delegation trip in the field of Advanced Materials which will take place in November 2018 in close cooperation with CAS, Mr. Philipp Agathonos, Minister Plenipotentiary for Science and Technology and director of OSTA visited the Technical Institute of Physics and Chemistry of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (TIPCCAS) on 12. September and had an exchange of views with Deputy Director Mr. WANG Xuesong. Both sides reviewed the successful Chinese-Austrian round table on advanced materials in 2016 and agreed to co-organize a one-day event including lab visit, science-to-science talks and B2B meetings this year.

On 16 January 2018, OSTA (Office of Science and Technology) successfully held the new year reception at the Austrian Embassy Beijing. The reception was opened by the host Mr Philipp Agathonos, Minister Plenipotentiary for Science and Technology, director of OSTA and HE Ambassador Friedrich Stift with sincere greetings to over 100 guests from EU Delegation, other EU-Embassies and partners from near and far such as CCUD (China Center of Urban Development), MOT (Ministry of Transport), CGS (China Geological Survey), EUPIC (EU Project Innovation Centre) Chengdu and Qingdao, ZJST (Science and Technology Department of Province Zhejiang),  representives from Tsinghua University, Peking University etc. and many Alumni of Austrian academic institutions.

All guests enjoyed the Austrian hospitality and the networking opportunities offered by the great variety of experts present.

2017 Austrian Alumni Christmas Event in Shanghai

On 9 December 2017, the Austrian Alumni Christmas Event was held at Intercontinental Shanghai Expo Hotel. Hosted by the Austrian Center Shanghai and co-sponsored by OSTA, this event has gathered over 80 guests with Austrian affiliations and experiences. OSTA Director Minister Plenipotentiary, Mr Philipp Agathonos, attended the event with a short speech on the current as well as the future role of OSTA in strengthening the Austrian Alumni network in China.

The event was moderated by Alexandra Wagner, the head of the Austrian Center Shanghai, and opened by Mrs Brigitte Seyrlehner, Consul-General of Austria in Shanghai. After speeches of the sponsoring parties and one alumna, all presenting alumni were engaged into conversation and the prize-drawing of a round-trip ticket to Vienna. The event ended with promises to tightening the Alumni bond, as well as networking measures, such as an updated WeChat group for the Austrian Alumni.
