Austrian Technology Day 2018 finished the first stop in Chengdu

05 November 2018 – The Austrian Technology Day 2018 (Chengdu), which was organized by the Austrian Federal Ministry for Transport, Innovation and Technology (BMVIT) and the Department of Science and Technology of Sichuan Province, co-organized by the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG), Office of Science and Technology (OSTA), Austrian Consulate General Chengdu Commercial Section and Austrian Technology Corporation (ATC), was successfully held at the Centre for China-Europe Cooperation (CCEC) managed by the EU Project Innovation Centre (EUPIC).

The Austrian Technology Day (Chengdu) was opened by Mr Martin Allgäuer, Austrian Consul General in Chengdu; Mr JING Shigang, Deputy Director General of the Department of Science and Technology of Sichuan Province; Mr Alexander Unkart, BMVIT; Ms Segree Dai, President of EUPIC and Ms Birgit Murr, Austrian Consul for Commercial Affairs in Chengdu. Mr Max Pfeiler, Deputy Director of OSTA, moderated the event.

This event gathered over 120 participants from both Austria and China, who discussed the following areas of possible cooperation: “Aeropolis” (Chengdu Tianfu International Airport), Environment & Energy and Urban Development & Disaster prevention. Representatives from 12 Austrian technology-oriented companies and research organisations (ATC, BT Seals Austria, Getzner, GWT, Lumitech, Neubau, M-U-T, Austrian State Printing Office, RISE, Geodata, AIT and FFG), held interesting presentations during the event, presenting various state-of-the-art Austrian technologies, products and services. Participants from the Chinese side came from local government, S&T organizations and over 40 companies. 6 Chinese companies also held presentations at each topic. On the margin of the event, participants of both sides were able to find potential partners at networking tea break and lunch buffet.

The Austrian Technology Day 2018 in Chengdu offered another outstanding opportunity for information exchange and further technology cooperation between Austria and Sichuan.

Burgenland delegation visits China

10 June 2018 – A Delegation of the Province of Burgenland and BMVIT, composed by Mr Hans Niessl (Governor), Mr Christian Illedits (President of the Provincial Parliament), Mr Alexander Petschnig (Vice Governor), Mr Gernot Grimm (Head of the Staff Group Technology Transfer) and other officials paid a visit to China from 10th to 17th of June 2018. The delegation stopped at first in Hongkong and Jieyang in order to meet several high level officials and take part in commercial forums.

On the 13th of June the Burgenland Delegation met Mr XU Dazhe (Governor of Hunan Province) accompanied by OSTA and Cultural Section of the Austrian Embassy, in Changsha and had fruitful talks about the long term established partnership of both sides. On the next day companies from Burgenland attended a business forum and promoted their advantageous technologies in the fields of energy efficiency and water treatment.

On the following days the Delegation made stops in the cities of Zhangjiajie and Shanghai. In Zhangjiajie the Mayor of the city of Mörbisch in Burgenland signed a partnership agreement with the Mayor of Zhangjiajie.

04 June 2018 – The Federal Ministry of Transport, Innovation and Technology of Austria (BMVIT) greeted distinguished guests from the Chengdu Development and Reform Commission and the China Center for Urban Development in Vienna. During their fruitful and result-orientated discussions the two delegations jointly talked about projects relating to JPI Urban Europe, Smart City, Positive Energy Efficient Buildings and Districts. Max Pfeiler, Deputy Director of OSTA, accompanied the delegation and provided valuable background information which facilitated the discussions.

At the end of the meeting both sides confirmed their readiness to swiftly engage in follow-up activities.

During the state visit of Austrian Federal President Van der Bellen and Federal Counsellor Sebastian Kurz to China, the Federal Minister for Digital and Economic Affairs, Dr. Margarete Schramböck visited the Huawei Beijing Exhibition Center, the Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM) and the Alibaba Group on Monday, 9th of April 2018. Both sides emphasized the importance of maintaining a functioning multilateral trade system and exploring the potential provided by the increase in the volume of E-Commerce.

On Tuesday, 10th of April, Minister Schramböck participated at the opening and the signing ceremony of the Austrian Technology Day co-organized by OSTA (on behalf of FFG) and Austrian Economic Chambers (WKÖ). She subsequently attended a bilateral meeting with representatives of the China Electronics Technology Group (CETC) and paid a visit to the Jingdong (JD) Technology Co. Ltd., where a strategic cooperation agreement was signed. During the subsequent bilateral meeting at the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) she had an exchange of views on Austrian-Chinese cooperation in the field of electronic industry.

Minister Schramböck concluded her visit at the Austrian Embassy in Beijing, where she co-signed an MoU concluded between the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG) and the EU Project Innovation Center (EUPIC) and attended a reception organized by OSTA with more than 40 Chinese and Austrian representatives from renowned IT-related companies, universities and institutes.

On 16 January 2018, OSTA (Office of Science and Technology) successfully held the new year reception at the Austrian Embassy Beijing. The reception was opened by the host Mr Philipp Agathonos, Minister Plenipotentiary for Science and Technology, director of OSTA and HE Ambassador Friedrich Stift with sincere greetings to over 100 guests from EU Delegation, other EU-Embassies and partners from near and far such as CCUD (China Center of Urban Development), MOT (Ministry of Transport), CGS (China Geological Survey), EUPIC (EU Project Innovation Centre) Chengdu and Qingdao, ZJST (Science and Technology Department of Province Zhejiang),  representives from Tsinghua University, Peking University etc. and many Alumni of Austrian academic institutions.

All guests enjoyed the Austrian hospitality and the networking opportunities offered by the great variety of experts present.

Austrian and Chinese scientists share experience in nanotechnology cooperation

On the occasion of the visit of the Austrian delegation of nanotechnology experts, OSTA organized a workshop on the topic “results of the nano delegation visit to China 2015” at the Austrian embassy on the 14 September 2017.

In the framework of the joint call between Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG) and Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), three joint research projects were selected in 2015 and financially supported. The Chinese project winners from Institute of Microelectronics CAS, Institute of Chemistry CAS und Institute of Physics CAS were invited to the workshop and introduced their research projects jointly with their Austrian partners.

Top researchers from the Beijing Institute of Nanoenergy and Nanosystems of the Chinese Academy of Sciences also attended the workshop and presented their research projects. Following the workshop, all the participants were invited to a welcome reception at the Austrian Embassy.

16 March 2017 – Representatives from renowned Austrian and Chinese research institutes as well as Austrian companies active in the field of Information and Communications Technology were cordially welcomed at the Austrian Embassy in Beijing by Philipp Agathonos, Minister Plenipotentiary for Science and Technology and director of OSTA. The Austrian delegation started its tour through China in Shenzhen. After stops in Guangzhou and Shanghai the Austrian experts spend two days in Beijing, where they visited the Institute of Computing Technology (ICT CAS) and the Institute of Software, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IS CAS).

16 March 2017 – On the occasion of the visit of 25 Austrian ICT experts, a workshop on Internet of Things was held at the Austrian Embassy Beijing. Helmut Leopold, director of the digital safety and security department of the Austrian Institute of Technology (AIT), Prof. Xiong Gang, deputy director of the Beijing Engineering Research Centre of Intelligent Systems and Technology and Dominic Klein from the EU Delegation to China Held a lively discussions shedding light to various scientific, technical and security aspects of the issue. The event was opened and moderated by Philipp Agathonos, Minister Plenipotentiary for Science and Technology and director of OSTA.

OSTA relocates to the base of the Austrian Embassy

Moving from Sunflower Tower to Jianguomen

16 January 2017 – The Office of Science and Technology Austria Beijing (OSTA) is moving from Sunflower Tower to the compound of the Austrian Embassy in Jianguomen after five successful years of operations. During the years at Sunflower OSTA received tremendous support from all Chinese, Austrian and EU stakeholders, that enabled as to perform our tasks as smooth as possible. The relocation marks a new beginning and allows OSTA to better use synergies with the core team of the Austrian Embassy, e.g. in hosting its own events such as workshops, seminars and other meetings in the premises of the Embassy.
