The third edition of the Vienna Cyber Security Week (VCSW) was successfully held from 11 to 15 March 2019 in Vienna. The conference was organized by the Austrian Institute of Technology (AIT), the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber (WKÖ) and the Energypact Foundation, with the support of the Federal Ministry of Transport, Innovation and Technology (BMVIT), the Federal Ministry of the Interior (BMI), the Federal Ministry of Defence (BMLV) the Federal Chancellery (BKA) and the Federal Ministry for Europe, Integration and Foreign Affairs (BMEIA), as well as the ITU, the IEC and the OSCE.

The VCSW 2019 brought together national and international stakeholders in critical infrastructure and in cyber security for conducting information exchange, confidence building, and enhancing awareness of the risks and state of practice for digital system protection. Mr Agathonos, Minister Plenipotentiary, Director of OSTA, held a keynote speech on ethical aspects of Artificial Intelligence during the concluding day of the conference, which also included representatives of US-Tech Giant Google and the China Electronics Technology Group.

The five days event offered a unique forum for both governmental and non-governmental partners to delve into substantive debates from Energy Security, Finance Industry 5.0, and Cyber Challenges and Resilience in Transportation, over Critical Infrastructure Cyber Protection and Incident Response, Smart City and Smart Protection to Combatting Cyber-Terrorism and Cyber-Crime. A dedicated Women’s Cyber Forum also took place.

During the event several Austrian and international enterprises, in particular SME’s, had the opportunity to present their products and engage in B2B talks.

The Cyber Security Week 2020 will be held again at the same location between 23 and 27 March 2020.

January 25, 2019 – As suggested by the Mayor, Mr Mao, Mr Agathonos, Minister Plenipotentiary for Science and Technology, Director of OSTA, visited the Yangtze Delta Region Institute of Tsinghua University, Zhejiang and the CETC Information Industrial Park – the 36th Institute of China Electronics Technology Group Corporation of Jiaxing to explore ways for a deeper bilateral collaboration with Austria.

Yangtze Delta Region Research Institute of Tsinghua University, Zhejiang, is co-founded by Zhejiang Provincial Government and Tsinghua University with the aims of mutual complementarity and common development.

The 36th Institute of China Electronics Technology Group Corporation belongs to the national first-class research institutes on special communication technologies, research and production. It is a supporting unit of the International Key Laboratory of communication information control and security technology. It is also the only professional institute for communication countermeasures in China.



Austrian Technology Day 2018 finished the first stop in Chengdu

05 November 2018 – The Austrian Technology Day 2018 (Chengdu), which was organized by the Austrian Federal Ministry for Transport, Innovation and Technology (BMVIT) and the Department of Science and Technology of Sichuan Province, co-organized by the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG), Office of Science and Technology (OSTA), Austrian Consulate General Chengdu Commercial Section and Austrian Technology Corporation (ATC), was successfully held at the Centre for China-Europe Cooperation (CCEC) managed by the EU Project Innovation Centre (EUPIC).

The Austrian Technology Day (Chengdu) was opened by Mr Martin Allgäuer, Austrian Consul General in Chengdu; Mr JING Shigang, Deputy Director General of the Department of Science and Technology of Sichuan Province; Mr Alexander Unkart, BMVIT; Ms Segree Dai, President of EUPIC and Ms Birgit Murr, Austrian Consul for Commercial Affairs in Chengdu. Mr Max Pfeiler, Deputy Director of OSTA, moderated the event.

This event gathered over 120 participants from both Austria and China, who discussed the following areas of possible cooperation: “Aeropolis” (Chengdu Tianfu International Airport), Environment & Energy and Urban Development & Disaster prevention. Representatives from 12 Austrian technology-oriented companies and research organisations (ATC, BT Seals Austria, Getzner, GWT, Lumitech, Neubau, M-U-T, Austrian State Printing Office, RISE, Geodata, AIT and FFG), held interesting presentations during the event, presenting various state-of-the-art Austrian technologies, products and services. Participants from the Chinese side came from local government, S&T organizations and over 40 companies. 6 Chinese companies also held presentations at each topic. On the margin of the event, participants of both sides were able to find potential partners at networking tea break and lunch buffet.

The Austrian Technology Day 2018 in Chengdu offered another outstanding opportunity for information exchange and further technology cooperation between Austria and Sichuan.

19 September 2018 – The 13th EU-China Business and Technology Cooperation Fair opened in Chengdu. On invitation of the EU Project Innovation Centre (EUPIC Chengdu), Mr Agathonos, Minister Plenipotentiary and director of OSTA attended this significant event. Following a VIP meeting with the Chengdu Municipal Government and the opening ceremony, Mr Agathonos held a keynote presentation regarding “Technological Innovation – Enabling Security and Sustainability” at the EU-China New Economy Forum. On behalf of AIT Austrian Institute of Technology, He introduced OSTA and presented selected Austrian technologies portfolio in the field of digital safety and cyber security and green environmental technologies, such as the state-of-the-art digital identity border management for airport security, Blockchain forensic and DMC production based on CO², which caught great attention from attending partners. Mr Agathonos also noted, that Chengdu was the final station of the SilkRoad4.0 trip by Mr Philipe Reinisch, who traveled with a motorbike from Europe to Asia along the silk road.

On the following day, 20 September, the 17th WCIF – Western China International Fair also opened in Chengdu. Austrian booth within the EU exhibition hall, provided and set up by EUPIC free of charge gave us the chance to present OSTA, the AIT the SilkRoad4.0 project as well as the (governmental) Agency for European Integration (AEI), which signed an MoU with EUPIC. It attracted many visitors.

On the 29 of June 2018, the 22nd China International Software Expo was opened at Beijing Exhibition Center. Philipp Agathonos, Minister Plenipotentiary for Science and Technology attended the global summit forum of software industry development.

The Expo was hosted by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) and the Beijing Municipal People’s Government. Miao Wei, Minister of MIIT and Chen Jining, Mayor of Beijing delivered welcoming speeches. The forum gathered representatives from nearly 400 companies, officials from 18 Chinese local administrations and 11 foreign embassies, discussing software development, big data and information technology.


The 10th China Energy & Environment Summit opens

On the 1st of December 2017, the 10th China Energy & Environment Summit (CEES) opened at the Lecture Hall of University of International Business and Economics (UIBE). Following the invitation of CEES, Minister Plenipotentiary Philipp Agathonos attended the Summit and held a presentation on “Cyber Security and Critical Energy Infrastructure”.

As one of the five keynote speakers on the opening, Mr Agathonos emphasized the necessity and requirement of cyber security and introduced capacity building and successful established R&D competences in the field of digital safety and security in Austria, and in particular of the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology. He underlined the linkages between cyber security, energy and infrastructure. Mr Agathonos also mentioned the National Cyber-Exercise for critical infrastructure operators in Austria, which took place on 6-7th of November 2017 and the Vienna Cyber Security Week, which will take place from 29th of January to 2nd February 2018 and will focus on the Protection of Critical Energy Infrastructure and the Security of Smart Cities and Energing Technologies.

CEES is organized by the China Energy and Environment Research Center and China’s Economic Trends Research Institute of Economic Daily News. Supporting Organizations include the NDRC, the National Energy Administration (NEA), the Institute of International Economy of UIBE and CCUD. Mr. Shifang SUN, president of China’s Economic Trends Research Institute of Economic Daily; Mr. Zhiqin LIN, deputy chairman of CEES, Director of China Energy and Environment Research Center, Prof. of UIBE etc. participated in the summit.
