March 26, 2019 – The China-EU Research and Innovation Stakeholders Tour 2019 continues to its second cluster, Wuhan and Chongqing. In Wuhan, the event was opened by Dr. Philippe Vialatte, Minister Counsellor, Head of the Science and Technology Section, Delegation of the European Union to China, Mr. DU Yun, Deputy Director General of Hubei Provincial S&T Department, and Mr. XIE Xiaolin, Vice President of Huazhong University of Science and Technology.

Mr Max Pfeiler, Deputy Director of OSTA, as well as representatives from the EU Delegation, the Nederlands, Germany, Belgium, Italy, France and EURAXESS participated in this event. They introduced their current collaboration status quo on science, technology and innovation and presented opportunities for EU and bilateral cooperation with China. During the training session of Horizon 2020, the MSCA – Marie Skłodowska-Curie actions – was introduced by Mr Matteo Sabini, that Chinese institution can act as non-funded partner organisations to establish and strengthen collaborations with European partners. Representatives of the China Science and Technology Exchange Center (CSTEC), affiliate to the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), also gave an overview of new opportunities of China-EU STI cooperation as well as policies and application rules for China-EU CFM projects.

On March 28, the tour continued successfully to Chongqing, where the Chongqing Municipal S&T Bureau cordially granted relief to all tour activities.

Presenting the Austrian STI collaborations with China

12 March 2019 – The China-EU Research and Innovation Stakeholders Tour 2019 has been launched in Jinan, Shandong Province. The launching event was opened by Mr ZHANG Zhuxiu, Director General of Shandong Provincial Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs, and Mr Nicolas Chapius, the EU Ambassador to China. Mr Max Pfeiler, Deputy Director of OSTA, as well as representatives from the EU Delegation, Germany, Latvia, Italy and EURAXESS participated in this event. They introduced their current collaboration status quo on science, technology and innovation and presented opportunities for EU and bilateral cooperation with China. Chinese representatives of the Ministry of Science and Technology and its affiliated China Science and Technology Exchange Center (CSTEC) also gave an overview of China-EU cooperation policies and further opportunities.

On the following day, the event continued successfully to Qingdao where the local S&T authorities and the Qingdao Institute of Bioenergy and Bioprocess Technology (Chiniese Academy of Sciences) cordially granted relief to all tour activities.

Expanding the cooperation

January 25, 2019 – As suggested by the Mayor, Mr Mao, Mr Agathonos, Minister Plenipotentiary for Science and Technology, Director of OSTA, visited the Yangtze Delta Region Institute of Tsinghua University, Zhejiang and the CETC Information Industrial Park – the 36th Institute of China Electronics Technology Group Corporation of Jiaxing to explore ways for a deeper bilateral collaboration with Austria.

Yangtze Delta Region Research Institute of Tsinghua University, Zhejiang, is co-founded by Zhejiang Provincial Government and Tsinghua University with the aims of mutual complementarity and common development.

The 36th Institute of China Electronics Technology Group Corporation belongs to the national first-class research institutes on special communication technologies, research and production. It is a supporting unit of the International Key Laboratory of communication information control and security technology. It is also the only professional institute for communication countermeasures in China.

January 24, 2019 – Mr Philipp Agathonos, Minister Plenipotentiary for Science and Technology, Director of OSTA, visited the Science and Technology Department of Province Zhejiang in Hangzhou for a follow-up discussion on the Austrian Technology Day, which took place on November 7, 2018 in Hangzhou.

Mr Agathonos subsequently visited the Institute of New Industries of Shanghai University in Jiaxing. The visit was a follow-up to the BMVIT-led Austrian delegation on New Materials, which visited several cities in China, including the Shanghai University, in November 2018. BMVIT and the Shanghai University have agreed to organize a two-day workshop in Shanghai and Jiaxing in early September to review the achievements of their five-year long cooperation. The Institute expressed the willingness to be part of the running projects and expand the Sino-Austria cooperation in the field of industrialization in the future.

In the afternoon, Mr Agathonos met the Mayor of Jiaxing, Mr MAO Hongfang, who expressed his satisfaction for the intense exchanges between the City of Jiaxing and Austria in the field of smart city, based on the MoU signed between the Austrian Technology Corporation (ATC) and the Nanhu District of Jiaxing during the State of Visit of the Austrian Federal President in April 2018, and his support for the upcoming Austrian Technology in May, which should focus on green buildings, new energy systems and mobility. Mayor MAO also express his wish for a closer cooperation between the Yangtze Delta Institute of the Tsinghua University based in Jiaxing and Austria in the field of technology exchange.

OSTA visited USTC in Shanghai

Strength the Chinese and Austrian cooperation on ICT

17 January 2019 – Mr. Philipp Agathonos, the director of the Science and Technology Section of the Austrian Embassy Beijing (OSTA) visited the Shanghai Institute for Advanced Studies of University of Science & Technology of China (USTC). Mr. Agathonos was warmly welcomed by Prof. PAN Jianwei, the vice president of the USTC. Mr. Agathonos complimented Prof. PAN as the most famous and influential Chinese Alumnus from Austria and the top scientist in China.

During the meeting, Mr. Agathonos introduced the upcoming Cyber Security Week in the March and sincerely invited Prof. PAN to attend the event in Vienna. Mr. Agathonos also extended the wish to co-organize scientific workshop between Prof. PAN’s research group and the Austrian ICT delegation in November, which will take place within the scope of the CAS-FFG joint call.

Prof. PAN expressed his thanks and looked forward to the visiting of the Austrian delegation on ICT, which will be an excellent opportunity to enhance the Chinese and Austrian cooperation. Furthermore, Prof. PAN mentioned that he plans to invite dozens of the Austrian top PhD-students to visit Shanghai in the spring this year. OSTA kindly offered to support the relevant preparations.

Austrian delegation on Advanced Materials successfully visited China

A delegation with 18 Austrian experts on advanced materials from excellent Austrian universities and representatives from Austrian companies successfully visited China from 11-16 November 2018. The visit was organized by the Office of Science and Technology of the Austrian Embassy in Beijing (OSTA) in collaboration with Advantage Austria, the Austrian Chamber of Commerce and led by the Austrian Ministry for Transport, Innovation and Technology (BMVIT). The main purpose of the delegation visit was identifying additional potential cooperation partners and preparing for the upcoming joint calls: the fifth joint call between the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG) and the Chinese Academy of Science (CAS) and the fourth joint call between FFG and the Shanghai University.

During the visit, Sino-Austrian Roundtables on Advanced Materials, lab visits and individual science to science and business to business meetings were arranged with Chinese researchers from different renowned CAS institutes: the Institute of Metal Research, Chinese Academy of Science (IMRCAS) in Shenyang, the Technical Institute of Physics and Chemistry of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (TIPCCAS) in Beijing, the Ningbo Institute of Industrial Technology of the Chinese Academy of Science (CNITECH) in Ningbo, the Shanghai University and the Shanghai Institute of Ceramics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (SICCAS) as well as numerous Chinese companies.

The visit offered an excellent opportunity for the Austrian participants to exchange information with their potential cooperation partners, to gain deeper insights into their research areas and to get closer contact with each other.

05 November 2018 – The Austrian Technology Day 2018 (Chengdu), which was organized by the Austrian Federal Ministry for Transport, Innovation and Technology (BMVIT) and the Department of Science and Technology of Sichuan Province, co-organized by the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG), Office of Science and Technology (OSTA), Austrian Consulate General Chengdu Commercial Section and Austrian Technology Corporation (ATC), was successfully held at the Centre for China-Europe Cooperation (CCEC) managed by the EU Project Innovation Centre (EUPIC).

The Austrian Technology Day (Chengdu) was opened by Mr Martin Allgäuer, Austrian Consul General in Chengdu; Mr JING Shigang, Deputy Director General of the Department of Science and Technology of Sichuan Province; Mr Alexander Unkart, BMVIT; Ms Segree Dai, President of EUPIC and Ms Birgit Murr, Austrian Consul for Commercial Affairs in Chengdu. Mr Max Pfeiler, Deputy Director of OSTA, moderated the event.

This event gathered over 120 participants from both Austria and China, who discussed the following areas of possible cooperation: “Aeropolis” (Chengdu Tianfu International Airport), Environment & Energy and Urban Development & Disaster prevention. Representatives from 12 Austrian technology-oriented companies and research organisations (ATC, BT Seals Austria, Getzner, GWT, Lumitech, Neubau, M-U-T, Austrian State Printing Office, RISE, Geodata, AIT and FFG), held interesting presentations during the event, presenting various state-of-the-art Austrian technologies, products and services. Participants from the Chinese side came from local government, S&T organizations and over 40 companies. 6 Chinese companies also held presentations at each topic. On the margin of the event, participants of both sides were able to find potential partners at networking tea break and lunch buffet.

The Austrian Technology Day 2018 in Chengdu offered another outstanding opportunity for information exchange and further technology cooperation between Austria and Sichuan.

In preparation for the Austrian delegation trip in the field of Advanced Materials which will take place in November 2018 in close cooperation with CAS, Mr. Philipp Agathonos, Minister Plenipotentiary for Science and Technology and director of OSTA visited the Technical Institute of Physics and Chemistry of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (TIPCCAS) on 12. September and had an exchange of views with Deputy Director Mr. WANG Xuesong. Both sides reviewed the successful Chinese-Austrian round table on advanced materials in 2016 and agreed to co-organize a one-day event including lab visit, science-to-science talks and B2B meetings this year.

02 August 2018 – Mr. Ingolf Schädler, Head of Innovation at the Austrian Federal Ministry for Transport, Innovation and Technology, Dr. Margit Noll, Chair of the Management Board of JPI Urban Europe, and Mr. Max Pfeiler, Deputy Director of OSTA, paid a first visit to the Science and Technology Department of the Sichuan Province (SCST) in Chengdu. Both sides held fruitful talks and reached a deeper understanding during their meeting. Mr Schädler held a presentation on Research, Technology and Innovation (RTI) in Austria by introducing the state-of-the-art examples on smart city and emphasized the important role of BMVIT and FFG. Mr. Chen Xuehua, Deputy Director General of SCST presented the S&T achievements and developments as well as current international cooperations of the Province Sichuan. Both sides discussed the common interests on potential cooperation fields. Mr. Pfeiler reported on the next Austrian Technology Day in Chengdu scheduled for the autumn and SCST expressed its readiness to support this project.

On the occasion of the state visit of Austrian Federal President Dr. Alexander Van der Bellen, the Office for Science and Technology Austria (OSTA), the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG) and the Austrian Chamber of Commerce co-organized the Austrian Technology Day in Beijing, on 10th April 2018.

Mr Norbert Hofer, Federal Minister for Transport, Innovation and Technology, Ms Margarete Schramböck, Federal Minister for Digitalisation and Economy, Mr Christoph Leitl, President of the Austrian Chamber of Commerce and Mr Fan Hengshan, Deputy Secretary General of the National Development and Reform Commission attended the opening ceremony and witnessed the signing of eight cooperation agreements between Austria and China. During the opening session, FFG signed an MoU with the Zhejiang Science and Technology Department (ZSTD). This agreement will be an important cornerstone for the future cooperation in the field of research and development between companies and research institutions in Austria and the province Zhejiang.

The Austrian Ministry for Transport, Innovation and Technology (BMVIT) and the FFG in cooperation with Advantage Austria has launched the pilot initiative “Tecxport” (TEChnology and eXPORT) last year. The initiative aims to facilitate the establishment of business relationships and the transfer of technology. During the Austrian Technology Day, more than 80 well-known Austrian and Chinese companies attended the event and listened to 41 company presentations on latest technologies, products and services. The topics of the presentations covered subjects from mobility technologies, over smart city technologies and green energy to production technologies.

The Austrian Technology Day was an outstanding opportunity for Austrian companies to present their technologies and find potential Chinese partners.
