07 November 2018 – The second part of the Austrian Technology Day took place at the Double Tree Hilton Hotel in Hangzhou. The event was hosted by the People’s Government of Zhejiang Province and the Austrian Federal Ministry for Transport, Innovation and Technology (BMVIT). Furthermore, the Science and Technology Department of Zhejiang Province (ZJST), the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG), the Office of Science and Technology (OSTA), the Commercial Section of the Austrian Consulate General Shanghai and the Austrian Technology Corporation (ATC) acted as co-organisers for the Austrian Technology Day.

The Austrian Technology Day was opened by Mr Philipp Agathonos, Minister Plenipotentiary at the Austrian Embassy in Beijing and Director of OSTA, Mr Song Zhiheng, Deputy Director General of the (ZJST), Mr Alexander Unkart, BMVIT, Ms Lisa Kronreif, Austrian Vice Consul for Commercial Affairs in Shanghai and Mr Christian Frey, Head of Tecxport Initiative of FFG.

The event gathered over 160 participants from Austria and China exchanging their experiences and identifying potential cooperations in the fields of Smart Urban Development, Digital Economy and Intelligent Manufacturing, Environment, Energy, Life Science and Other. The Austrian Representatives consisted of 12 Austrian technology-oriented companies and research organisations (ATC, BT Seals Austria, Getzner, GWT, Lumitech, Neubau, M-U-T, Austrian State Printing Office, S::CAN, Geodata, AIT and FFG) and presented various state-of-the-art Austrian technologies, products and services. 6 Chinese companies also held topic-specific presentations. Participants from the Chinese side came from local government, S&T organizations and over 80 enterprises. At the end of the event, participants of both sides were given the opportunity to find potential partners at networking tea break and lunch buffet.

The Austrian Technology Day in Hangzhou is the next step of a successful cooperation with Chinese stakeholders and highlighted the appreciation of both countries for each other.

06 November 2018 – The first Joint Working Group Meeting between the Austrian Technology Corporation (ATC) and the Nanhu District of Jiaxing City was successfully held in Jiaxing Science City. The Austrian delegation was headed by Mr Alexander Unkart, from the Federal Ministry for Transport, Innovation and Technology of the Republic of Austria (BMVIT). The Chinese delegation was headed by Mr CAO Jiandi, Director of Development and Reform Bureau (DRC) of Nanhu District and Mr ZHOU Chuangen, Deputy Director of DRC Nanhu and included representatives from urban planning organisations.

Both sides held in-depth discussions regarding the cooperation in the field of smart city. Following a general introduction of Nanhu District and Jiaxing Science City, Mr Tino Terraneo, CEO of ATC held an informative presentation on smart city solutions, focusing on urban planning, smart mobility, smart energy, urban farming, green city, urban environment, E-Government, E-Health, safety and security, etc. Ms Sandra Schneider from the Austrian Institute of Technology (AIT) also introduced a new generation of urban planning tools and methods, such as rapid prototyping of cities, infrastructure and districts. Active and constructive talks were held after the presentations.

05 November 2018 – The Austrian Technology Day 2018 (Chengdu), which was organized by the Austrian Federal Ministry for Transport, Innovation and Technology (BMVIT) and the Department of Science and Technology of Sichuan Province, co-organized by the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG), Office of Science and Technology (OSTA), Austrian Consulate General Chengdu Commercial Section and Austrian Technology Corporation (ATC), was successfully held at the Centre for China-Europe Cooperation (CCEC) managed by the EU Project Innovation Centre (EUPIC).

The Austrian Technology Day (Chengdu) was opened by Mr Martin Allgäuer, Austrian Consul General in Chengdu; Mr JING Shigang, Deputy Director General of the Department of Science and Technology of Sichuan Province; Mr Alexander Unkart, BMVIT; Ms Segree Dai, President of EUPIC and Ms Birgit Murr, Austrian Consul for Commercial Affairs in Chengdu. Mr Max Pfeiler, Deputy Director of OSTA, moderated the event.

This event gathered over 120 participants from both Austria and China, who discussed the following areas of possible cooperation: “Aeropolis” (Chengdu Tianfu International Airport), Environment & Energy and Urban Development & Disaster prevention. Representatives from 12 Austrian technology-oriented companies and research organisations (ATC, BT Seals Austria, Getzner, GWT, Lumitech, Neubau, M-U-T, Austrian State Printing Office, RISE, Geodata, AIT and FFG), held interesting presentations during the event, presenting various state-of-the-art Austrian technologies, products and services. Participants from the Chinese side came from local government, S&T organizations and over 40 companies. 6 Chinese companies also held presentations at each topic. On the margin of the event, participants of both sides were able to find potential partners at networking tea break and lunch buffet.

The Austrian Technology Day 2018 in Chengdu offered another outstanding opportunity for information exchange and further technology cooperation between Austria and Sichuan.

20 September 2018 – An Austrian Delegation, headed by Mr Agathonos, Minister Plenipotentiary and director of OSTA, accompanied by Mr Martin Allgäuer, Consul General of Austria in Chengdu, met representatives of the Chengdu Municipal Development and Reform Commission and the Chengdu Municipal Science and Technology Department. Both sides exchanged opinions regarding specific cooperation fields and possibility of co-hosting the event Austrian Technology Day, which will presumably take place on 05 November in Chengdu.

20 September 2018 – In the margin of WCIF – Western China International Fair, Mr Agathonos, Minister Plenipotentiary and director of OSTA and Mr Martin Allgäuer, Consul General of Austria in Chengdu met the Director General of Science and Technology Department of Sichuan Province, Mr LIU Dong. Mr Agathonos firstly presented the Austrian booth to DG Liu and both sides subsequently held fruitful talks regarding the possible fields for bilateral cooperation and the preparation of Austrian Technology Day, which will presumably take place on 05 November in Chengdu.

19 September 2018 – The 13th EU-China Business and Technology Cooperation Fair opened in Chengdu. On invitation of the EU Project Innovation Centre (EUPIC Chengdu), Mr Agathonos, Minister Plenipotentiary and director of OSTA attended this significant event. Following a VIP meeting with the Chengdu Municipal Government and the opening ceremony, Mr Agathonos held a keynote presentation regarding “Technological Innovation – Enabling Security and Sustainability” at the EU-China New Economy Forum. On behalf of AIT Austrian Institute of Technology, He introduced OSTA and presented selected Austrian technologies portfolio in the field of digital safety and cyber security and green environmental technologies, such as the state-of-the-art digital identity border management for airport security, Blockchain forensic and DMC production based on CO², which caught great attention from attending partners. Mr Agathonos also noted, that Chengdu was the final station of the SilkRoad4.0 trip by Mr Philipe Reinisch, who traveled with a motorbike from Europe to Asia along the silk road.

On the following day, 20 September, the 17th WCIF – Western China International Fair also opened in Chengdu. Austrian booth within the EU exhibition hall, provided and set up by EUPIC free of charge gave us the chance to present OSTA, the AIT the SilkRoad4.0 project as well as the (governmental) Agency for European Integration (AEI), which signed an MoU with EUPIC. It attracted many visitors.

08 June 2018 – A delegation led by the Chengdu Hi-tech Zone and EU Project Innovation Center (EUPIC) visited Austria and participated at the Austrian-China S&T Cooperation Forum which was hosted by the Vienna Chamber of Commerce and the Austrian Promotion Agency. A group of Chinese officials also used this opportunity to meet representatives of several Austrian Ministries (BMVIT, BMDW and BMBWF) and the Global Incubator Network, which supports international Start-up cooperation.  Philipp Agathonos, Minister Plenipotentiary for Science and Technology and Max Pfeiler (both OSTA), supported the delegation in terms of moderating the event and facilitating the visit of the delegation to the AIT and the ÖBB Open Innovation Centre.

The sixth Joint Working Group meeting between the Federal Ministry for Transport, Innovation and Technology of the Republic of Austria (BMVIT) and the National Development and Reform Commission of the People’s Republic of China (NDRC) was held in Beijing on the 16 March 2018. The Chinese delegation was headed by Mr. ZHENG Jian. The Austrian delegation was headed by Mr. Gernot GRIMM, Head of Staff Group for Technology Transfer and Security Research, BMVIT.

Both sides held in-depth discussions regarding the cooperation in the field of infrastructure technology, especially focusing on Infrastructure and Urbanization, Railways & rail bound urban transport systems, Water Management, E-mobility and autonomous driving. As a special feature of this year’s Joint Working Group Meeting, representatives from nearly 20 renowned Chinese and Austrian technology companies and research institutions attended the meeting and presented their latest technologies, products and ideas for cooperation. Both sides highly esteemed the participation of representatives from companies, which will to a large extent accelerate the implementation of future cooperation projects.

The meeting featured presentations among others by the Austrian Railway Group (ÖBB), Austria Rail Engineering (ARE), the Austrian Institute of Technology (AIT) and the Austrian Research Promoting Agency (FFG).

On 22 December 2017, “Digital Creativity Prints the Future” – Forum on 3D Printing Industrial Innovation and Development opened in Beijing. Following the invitation of the Fengtai Science Park 3D Printing Digital Innovation Center, Minister Plenipotentiary Philipp Agathonos attended the Summit and held a presentation on “Strategies for innovative Technology and Enterprises in Austria”. Mr Agathonos presented the RTI-Initiative, “products of the future” of the Federal Ministry for Transport, Innovation and Technology and introduced leading 3D Printing companies from Austria, such as Cubicure and Lithoz.

The 2017 “Digital Creativity Prints the Future” Summit Forum on 3D Printing Industrial Innovation and Development is co-hosted by the Administrative Committee of Zhongguancun Fengtai Science Park and the Beijing Fengtai Science Park Development Ltd. Top experts, such as Mr HE Jingtang, Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering; Mr ZHANG Haiou, Professor of Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) etc. attended the forum and held speeches not only to present the current achievements in 3D printing, but also explore in depth the potentiality of 3D printing for aerospace, health care, manufacturing, architecture, cultural and military industry.

Further opportunities for science and technology cooperation with Austria

After the launch of the EU-China Research and Innovation Tour at the Italian Embassy on 27th October 2017 in Beijing and the station on 1st November 2017 in Hangzhou, the Tour continued its track further to Shenzhen, Changsha, Wuhan, Hefei, Shanghai and ended on 1st December successfully in Suzhou. Representatives from the EU Delegation, Austria, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Germany, Spain, Switzerland and Croatia attended the events. They introduced their current situation on science, technology and innovation and presented opportunities for bilateral cooperation with China.

In Hefei station Austria was represented by OSTA Director Minister Plenipotentiary, Mr Philipp Agathonos. Max Pfeiler covered all other stations. They held speeches presenting the current and potential S&T cooperation between China and Austria. In Hefei Prof. Kai CHEN, Hefei National Laboratory for Physical Sciences at Microscale and Department of Modern Physics, University of Science and Technology of China (USTC), a collaborator of Austria’s most prominent Chinese alumnus, Prof. Jianwei PAN, gave a testimonial on cooperation in field of quantum communication following the speech of Mr Agathonos.

The EU-China Research and Innovation Tour received great responses from local S&T departments and created more opportunities for mutually beneficial cooperation with a variety of covering areas in the promising future.
