OSTA organized on October 11 and 12 the Austrian Science & Technology Days in Chengdu. The days, which were organized with the support of the EU Project Innovation Centre (EUPIC) for the first time within the framework of the Tecxport programme of the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG) in collaboration with the city of Chengdu and the Province of Sichuan, were opened by the Ambassador of Austria to China Mr Friedrich Stift.
Gernot Grimm (General Director in the Federal Ministry for Transport, Innovation and Technology), Philipp Agathonos (Director of OSTA), Christian Frey (Director at the FFG), Xuehua CHEN (Deputy Director-General of the S&T Department of Sichuan Province), Fuyi XU (Vice-Party Secretary of the Chengdu Industrial Hi-Tech Development Zone Work Group) and Tao LIN (Department Manager of the Chengdu Industrial Hi-Tech Development Zone Administrative Committee) played an active role on the first day, which was dedicated to presentations of Austrian technologies by Austrian research institutes and companies (ATC, AIT, SWARCO, MUT and Doppelmayr) in the areas of urban transport, waste management and geological disaster prevention. The presentations were followed by intense discussions between the two sides and marked out the high potential for concrete project-based cooperation.
In the evening the delegation visited the future HQ of EUPIC and attended a reception at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), which was hosting an exhibition by Austrian and Chinese contemporary artists. The event was attended by more than twenty provincial and city government officials of Chengdu and the Province of Sichuan as well as representatives of the Chengdu Hi-Tech Industrial Development Zone and relevant universities.
On October 12 HE Ambassador Friedrich Stift met with the CPC party leader of the city of Chengdu, Ruiping FAN, and the vice-governor of Sichuan province, Hexin ZHU and had an open and constructive dialogue.

On 10th October 2017 a delegation from OSTA leaded by Philipp Agathonos (Director of OSTA) visited the Xi’an University of Architecture and Technology and the Northwestern Polytechnical University in Xi’an in preparation for further joint programs and cooperation between them and Austrian higher education institutions.
After a guided tour through the local museum of the Xi’an University of Architecture and Technology and the historical collection of construction models OSTA presented the potential of possible cooperation between Austrian and Chinese universities and research facilities. Dean DUAN Degang of the university replied with a presentation of the university, pointing out their importance for Chinese architectural development and their interest into cooperation with foreign Universities.
In the afternoon the delegation accompanied by Dr. Mariella C. Remund, Guest Professor Northwestern Polytechnic University Xian, was cordially welcomed by vice-president Zhang Weihong to the Northwestern Polytechnical University. After a short introduction by Philipp Agathonos about OSTAs tasks and goals the university representatives presented the main research fields of the university pointing out a current cooperation with the Montanuniversität Leoben.

10 May 2017- From 10. to 12. May an Austrian delegation led by Dr. Gernot Grimm, head of staff group for technology transfer and security research, Austrian Federal Ministry for Science, Technology and Transport (BMVIT), and Philipp Agathonos, Minister Plenipotentiary for Science and Technology and Director of OSTA, attended the Global Innovation Entrepreneurship Fair in Chengdu.
On 10. May the delegation attended the GIEF opening ceremony and subsequently visited the new Business and Innovation Center, where they took part at the opening ceremony organised by EUPIC in the presence of the party Chairman in Chengdu Mr. Fan and EU Ambassador Mr. Schweisgut. In the afternoon the delegation attended the International Seminar on Intellectual Property and Urban Development, organised by the S&T Department Chengdu. In parallel, Mr. Agathonos paid a visit to the South West Transportation University, one of the top level Universities in China.
On 11. May the Delegation attended the World Future Technology Forum of S&T Department Chengdu and had a meeting with representatives of DRC and S&T Department Chengdu.
On the last day of this Chengdu trip the delegation attended the Belt and Road Summit, on which Dr. Grimm gave a startling speech on the summit. On the same day Mr. Agathonos attended the startup Event “Slush” as a guest of Mayor’s Assistant of Chengdu, Mr. HAN, and participated at the inaugural panel discussion on start-up promotion.
This visit laid the foundations of a deeper cooperation between Austria and Chengdu in the fields of Science and Technology.
Exchanging concepts for smart city development

9 December 2016 – From 5 to 9 December, a delegation led by the Austrian Ministry for Transport, Innovation and Technology (BMVIT) and the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG) met “Smart City”-stakeholders from Chinese universities, research institutes and government agencies. Alexander Unkart (BMVIT), Dr. Emmanuel Glenck and Robert Schwertner (both FFG), as well as representatives from the Austrian Consulate General in Guangzhou and Hong Kong and Philipp Agathonos, Minister Plenipotentiary for Science and Technology and Max Pfeiler (both OSTA), had lively discussions and on-site visits at the Polytechnic University Hong Kong, Guangzhou Smart City Research Institute, Guangdong Provincial Academy of Building Research Group, Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou Institute of Energy Conversion of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (GIEC) and the Guangzhou Institute for Urban Innovation (GIUI).
The delegation visit culminated in the signing of an agreement between FFG and Guangdong Science and Technology Department (GDST).
A double-degree Master program in “global sales and marketing” between FH OÖ and UIBE was established in 2015

12 October 2016 – Almost 40 students of global sales and marketing at the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria (FH OÖ) visited Beijing from 9-15 October 2016. The study trip took place within the framework of the double-degree Master program which was established between FH OÖ and University of International Business and Economics (UIBE) in Beijing in March 2015.
The students were warmly welcomed at the premises of the Austrian Embassy by Arnold Obermayr, Cultural Counsellor and head of the cultural forum on 12 October. Science Counsellor and director of OSTA, Peter Schintlmeister, provided knowledge and insights into the S&T landscape of China, followed by a lively discussion with the students.

25 June 2016 – At the opening ceremony of the two days seminar on lymphedema therapy, organized by the Zhejiang Cancer Hospital in Hangzhou, the general manager of Lohmann & Rauscher China, Mr. Georg Votava, and expert on wound management, Dr. Thomas Eberlein, explained the European university course “complex decongestive therapy” and gave insight into the health care system in Austria. The education and training seminar was attended by medical doctors, nurses and researchers from Chinese hospitals. Within the network of the Institute for technology-based Education in Health, Management and Social Service International (IHM), which combines several Austrian and European ministries, as well as Austrian and international research institutes and universities of applied sciences, Lohmann & Rauscher work together with Chinese partners to establish vocational training courses such as “lymphedema therapist” and “train the trainer” in China. OSTA delivered greetings to the audience.

20 June 2016 – In the framework of the cooperation between FFG and Shanghai University, a delegation of Shanghai University, lead by Prof. Shi Liyi, vice director of the Nanoscience and Technology Research Center at Shanghai University, visits Vienna University of Technology (TU Vienna), Montan-University Leoben, CTP Air Pollution Control and the Green Tech Cluster in Graz.
In preparation of the upcoming 2nd joint call between FFG and Shanghai University, a workshop on graphene-research was held at TU Vienna to present Austrian and Chinese expertise and to discuss joint research projects. Alexander Pogany, expert for national and international research policy in the area of industrial technologies at the BMVIT, and Peter Schintlmeister, director of OSTA, as well as Prof. Shi warmly welcomed the experts from China and Austria.
Welcome reception at the Austrian Embassy
15 June 2016 – Ambassador Mr. Hans Winkler, director of the Diplomatic Academy of Vienna / Vienna School of International Studies (DA Vienna) since 2009, visited China to discuss future cooperation with Chinese research institutes and universities such as the China Foreign Affairs University (CFAU) in Beijing. Hans Winkler was warmly welcomed by the Austrian Ambassador to China, Mrs. Irene Giner-Reichl, at the Austrian Embassy. Alumni of DA Vienna and high-ranking representatives of universities and research institutes in Beijing also attended the reception. The Diplomatic Academy of Vienna is a postgraduate professional school, dedicated to preparing talented university and college graduates for international careers and positions of leadership in international organizations, the EU, in public service and in international business.

11 June 2016 – On the occasion of the “Austrian Week” in Ulaanbaatar, Peter Schintlmeister, director of OSTA, visited Mongolia from 8-11 June. He had fruitful talks with high-ranking representatives of the National University of Mongolia (NUM), the Mongolian University of Science and Technology (MUST) and the University of Humanities. Prof. Wolf-Dieter Rausch, president of the Eurasia Pacific Uninet (EPU), together with Prof. Sarantuya Tsedendamba from MUST, organized an EPU Alumni meeting on 9 June. Amongst scientists from the Mongolian Academy of Sciences (MAS), MUST, NUM and the Mongolian University of Life Sciences (MULS), who gave an overview of their projects, Peter Schintlmeister held a keynote on science communication in Austria and Dr. Katharina Lang from the Austrian Academy of Sciences presented her research in Mongolia. All sides agreed to strengthen the partnership between Austrian and Mongolian universities, work together on science communication and build on existing ties to promote researchers mobility, especially for young scientists.

3 June 2016 – A workshop on how researchers from China can apply for funding in Europe took place at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) in Suzhou. Representatives of the EU, Euraxess, Denmark, the Netherlands, Norway and Spain held presentations on research funding and activities in their respective countries. Peter Schintlmeister, director of OSTA, introduced opportunities for research collaboration with Austria. The event attracted research staff and PhD students of XJTLU as well as external guests from institutions such as Renmin University and The University of Nottingham Ningbo China.
