17.09.2019, a preparatory meeting for the next Joint Working Group (JWG) between the Austrian Federal Ministry for Transport, Innovation and Technology (BMVIT) and the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) was held at the Austrian Embassy in Beijing. NDRC was represented by the Head of General Affairs, Mr. WU Hongyuan, and Senior Officer, Mr. MAO Kejun. Mr. Philipp Agathonos and Mr. Max Pfeiler, Director and Deputy Director of the Science and Technology Section of the Austrian Embassy Beijing (OSTA), welcomed Mr. Wu and Mr. Mao.
The NDRC proposed five topics for the next JWG and emphasized the importance of the concrete realization of projects. To ensure a successful preparation of the JWG, OSTA Beijing will pay a re-visit to NDRC and discuss further details regarding the topics and arrangements. Both sides expect fruitful results at the JWG.
Inspiration between Vienna and Beijing

06 May 2019 – On request by HE, Ambassador Friedrich Stift, OSTA has accompanied a delegation of the City of Vienna led by Vice Mayor Ms Maria Vassilakou during their stay in Beijing. On the first day of the visit Ms Vassilakou and Ambassadot Stift met with the Vice Mayor of Beijing, Mr Sui Zhenjiang, who attached great importance to the regular exchanges between the two capital cities.
The delegation then met with the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Economy and Information Technology, the Beijing Municipal Commission of Planning and Natural Resources and the Beijing Municipal Commission of Housing and Urban-Rural Development. The two sides exchanged information and views on current development and future plans in the fields of smart city quarters, urban planning and traffic management. They agreed to deepen their collaboration during the upcoming seminar with experts from Beijing during their visit to Vienna in the second half of June.
The delegation paid visits to several sites, including a smart urban quarter, the Jiu Long Community, Shuang Jing subdistrict (13 Community) of Chaoyang District, the Qingtang Wan subsidized housing community in Haidian District, the Beijing Municipal Transportation Operations Coordination Center (TOCC) and the new Shougang High-end Industry Comprehensive Service Parc, previously the main steel production facility in China, which is now serving as the centre for the Beijing 2022 winter Olympics. Ms Vassilakou also visited the Huawei Executive Briefing Center.
Focus on digitalization and urban development

11 April 2019 – the Huzhou seminar on the cultural innovation of Chinese – European urban development with the theme of „China-Europe Dialogue in the Digital Era“ was held in Huzhou.
The conference was hosted by Huzhou Municipal People’s Government, China Academy of Urban Planning and Design (CAUPD) and Central Academy of Fine Arts. It was co-organized by the German Hamburg Municipal Government and Tongji University. The conference was also supported by the China-Europe Sustainable Urbanization Cooperation Project Committee and the European Union Chamber of Commerce in China. Mr. Philipp Agathonos, the director of the Science and Technology Section of the Austrian Embassy Beijing (OSTA) participated at the seminar and exchanges views with representatives from the Chinese local government and universities. He presented the work of Austria on Urban Sustainable Development.
During the seminar the speakers and participants discussed deeply about opportunities and challenges of urban development in the digital age, China and Europe cooperation on digitalization of urbanization and smart city.
Promoting Austrian Technology and expertise in the area of urbanization
18 October 2018 – Mr. Philipp Agathonos, the director of the Science and Technology Section of the Austrian Embassy Beijing (OSTA) attended the annual work conference “Urban Living Lab” 2018 in Jingdezhen.
The focus of the conference was discussion about the implementation of the cooperation plan between the China Academy of Urban Planning and Design (CAUPD) and Jingdezhen, which was founded by the “China-EU Sustainable Urbanization Cooperation Project”. Mr. Agathonos held an informative presentation about new technologies and advantages of Austria in the fields of urbanization, urban planning as well as smart cities.
The conference brought together policy makers and experts from national wide and EU states to share practical and scientific experiences on urban planning, architecture and landscape design.
